Meet the Krew at Keva Cottonwood

This month’s “Keva Spotlight” is Keva Cottonwood! This month our Krew Members decided to share a little bit of their personal experience with you. One of our main goals at Keva Juice is to make your experience as personal as possible. Check out Keva Cottonwood’s Krew: do you recognize the Smoothie Maker who prepared your last Keva Juice?

“Keva Juice! Fast, Fresh, and Filling! Keva Juice is a great place to work, the people are nice and smoothies... Who doesn’t like a good smoothie! I have worked there for almost 3 years and it has been a great experience. I have learned a lot including some funny Keva Lingo- Blendsational, Kevalicious, and Bananaramarific! There have been a lot of fun times, once I was closing and the person I was closing with and I were singing and dancing to a song, well little did I know that a customer had been watching me the entire time! He came in and made sure to let me know that he had seen the whole show! LOL, but the funniest part is that next Sunday I was working and he came in again and recognized me! Oh good times good times :)” –Jordyn

“Keva Juice is my first, and probably one of the best and most laid-back jobs I’ll ever have. I really enjoy working with all of the people and giving the customers what they want.” -Joe

“I have worked at Keva Juice for a while now and I really enjoy working here because of the friendly, laid-back atmosphere and the people that I work with. The drinks that we make at Keva are delicious, and the variety never leaves you bored. There is something for everyone to enjoy.” – Jaiden

“When you come into Keva Cottonwood, the first question we'll ask you is what your name is. While this question is often met with confused looks and a general sense of puzzlement, we ask it for a reason! Of course, there's the practical reason: we need your name to distinguish your drink from everyone else's when our store's getting a lot of business (which is a pretty frequent occurrence)! But, beyond simply helping you identify your drink, providing us with your name gives us a better connection to you as a customer. By asking for your name, we're able to know a little bit more about you, our awesome customer!

So next time you come into Keva Cottonwood after one of your busy Saturday errand trips, whether you tell us your name is "Buzz Light-year" or "Rachel", we'll be able to make your experience a little bit better.

Thanks for buying our smoothies!” -Chet

“Keva juice is a great place to work! The people that you work with are friendly, everyone is nice to everyone, and say you need a shift covered or a day off all you have to do is text someone and they usually say yes because we want the hours! LOL! I also like it because of the environment, no matter what there's always a good atmosphere, and I love that. It’s just a fun place to work at, and it’s always a good place to get a smoothie.” -Matt

“What I love about Keva Juice are the people. We all get along really well and everyone has a good time even though we're working. It makes a good job even better when you’re always around friends.” -Shaelee

“Don't forget Keva Juice is always open to new drink ideas. If you want to add or take out a fruit or juice in your smoothie, don't be timid to ask an employee. We're here to make your Keva experience enjoyable. As for the working environment, I couldn't ask for a cooler job. It has been easy to make a great relationship with the managers, and fellow employees are hilarious. Everyone always has a fun time when they work. We make the most out of what we do, and have a blendsational time doing it.” -Jade

Join Us For a Hot Cup of Anitoxidants

We have all been hearing for some time now that antioxidants are a really important and healthy addition to our daily diet. But if you’re like me, though you jump at the opportunity to add any food, beverage or vitamin that claims antioxidant power to your diet, you don’t quite know what all the hype is about. For your benefit (and mine), here’s a brief lesson on why antioxidants are so important.

First, it would probably be important to know why it is that we need antioxidants in the first place. After doing some research, I found that it all starts with the naturally occurring process of oxidation. Here is a quick overview of what that process is and why as a result antioxidants have become so important to us.

"Oxidation is a normal process that takes place in the body. It causes damage to our cells, and it's believed that this cumulative damage is what causes aging and eventually death. It happens as a result of regular metabolism, but is accelerated by pollution, excessive exposure to sunlight, alcohol and smoking. A free radical is a charged atom or a piece of a molecule. In order to re-establish its own stability, a free radical looks to steal an electron from its surroundings. This usually means from one of your own healthy cells. You end up with a little bit of DNA damage, or a protein becomes dysfunctional. It may not seem like much, but all these little damages add up. Antioxidants are chemicals that generously offer up their own electrons to the free radicals, thus sparing you the cellular damage. Every time they neutralize a free radical, the antioxidant loses an electron and stops being able to function as an antioxidant. This is why you must continually resupply your body with the vitamins and other chemicals that act as antioxidants."

Ok, so now that we know how important they are, Where Can We Find Them?

  • Vitamins C and E
  • Beta-Carotin
  • Selenium
  • Nuts
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Meats
  • *Tea

For our discussion today- we will now focus on Tea. The specific kinds of antioxidants found in tea are called phenols, and they can also be found in a variety of berries and grapes. A growing body of research indicates that the tannins in tea are naturally-occurring flavonoids which have strong antioxidant properties. Drinking tea is a natural and pleasant way to increase dietary intake of antioxidants. Researchers indicated that it doesnt' matter if you choose black or green tea and that adding milk to tea, does not inhibit the body's ability to benefit from the antioxidants. Research suggests these phytonutrients may contribute substantially to the promotion of health and the prevention of chronic disease. For example, the antioxidants in tea may inhibit the growth of cancer cells and even support cardiovascular health!

82-year-old John Weisburger, PhD, senior researcher at the Institute for Cancer Prevention in Valhalla, N.Y. has the following to say about including tea as an antioxidant enhancing element into your diet. “Whether it's green or black, tea has about eight to 10 times the polyphenols found in fruits and vegetables. In my lab, we found that green and black tea had identical amounts of polyphenols. We found that both types of tea blocked DNA damage associated with tobacco and other toxic chemicals. In animal studies, tea-drinking rats have less cancer." For comparisons sake look at the world's big tea drinkers, like Japan and China. "They have much less heart disease and don't have certain cancers that we in the Western world suffer," says Weisburger.

So… You should think about heading in to your closest Keva Juice for a Hot Cup of Antioxidants today!
